Movie Final - My Favorite Movies of 2025

Image
2025 had a lot of interesting movies from many different genres. Superheroes, documentaries, vampires, and murder mysteries all made the list, just to name a few.

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2025

Image
The first half of 2025 has felt long, with everything going on. And there weren't as many powerful releases as some of the past years. Still there have been some fun ones that offer great escapes.

Movie Final - My Favorite Movies of 2024

Image
2024 had a wide variety of films that made a splash, and this year more than others seemed like it had something for everyone.

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2024

We are only 6 months into the year, and the cinematic landscape has been jam packed. In a pleasant surprise, there have been great documentaries and original movies so far this year too.

Movie Final - My Favorite Movies of 2023

2023 will always be remembered as the year of "Barbenheimer". But there were plenty of other gems that granted our screens too.

Movie Final - My Favorite Movies of 2022

Image
2022 was an interesting year for movies. While huge blockbusters kept movie theaters alive, other films found audiences in other ways. The industry is changing, and it is nice to see movies still finding its way to screens.

Thor: Love and Thunder - Review

Image
Thor is the only original Avenger to get a 4th solo movie, and has appeared in every Avengers movie to date. So what reason would there be to warrant a 4th solo outing (and an 8th adventure)? The answer it turns out, is love (and some thunder). Taika Waititi returned to the MCU after the colorful tonal shift he made to the character in Thor: Ragnarok . A lot of the same vibes return here to Love and Thunder which begins with Thor trying find his place in the universe post Endgame , while physically finding himself with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The film is a brisk (by MCU standards) 1 hour and 59 minutes, and wastes no time in setting up the villain, and plot of the entire movie. After a bit of catch up from the various players in the story and some larger MCU housekeeping, the movie takes off at a comfortably fast pace, and Waititi always keeps things moving without leaving anyone behind. The most interesting parts of the film are the deep emotional cores of the main players: T...

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2022

Image
The first half of 2022 had a lot of heavy hitters. There are a few films on here that will definitely be in the end of the year list. A few others are some small gems that should be sought out. Below are 3 honorable mentions and then my top 10 favorite films of the year so far.

Movie Final - My Favorite Movies of 2021

Image
2021 still had box office issues and non-traditional releases due to the global pandemic. But there was still magic to be found, if you knew where to look. A lot of great things came out this year, and I was fortunate enough to see many wonderful things.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Review

Image
Marvel's first brand new hero in Phase 4 came in at an uncertain time for movies, but the Marvel brand and the charisma of star Simu Liu proved to be enough. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of the MCU's strongest origin stories, and gives us a plethora of new characters and possibilities for the future of this shared universe.

Black Widow - Review

Image
Marvel's first female Avenger finally got her due in a solo project. After meeting her demise in Avengers: Endgame , it seemed like Natasha Romanoff's journey was at an end. But Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios make prequels also, so we were able to jump into a very personal journey for Scarlet Johansson's Black Widow.

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2021

Image
The first half of 2021 was still feeling that COVID lag of 2020. There wasn't a regular slate of movies in the last 6 months, but there were still some gems hidden in there. Below are 3 honorable mentions and then my top 10 favorite films of the year so far.

Zack Snyder's Justice League - Review

Image
Zack Snyder's Justice League is something special in that it exists at all. After having to leave the project in 2016, and a massive (sometimes toxic) fan campaign, Snyder's (mostly) original vision was restored and put on HBO Max. In short: It is an improvement over the theatrical cut, that has issues of its own, but doesn't keep it from being a vastly entertaining spectacle.

Movie Final - My Favorite Movies of 2020

Image
2020 has been a year like no other. The world has changed, and it affected our entertainment. Many big movies that I expected to be on the list were delayed. Some were released, but in different formats than I expected to see them. Still, despite everything, 2020 gave us some wonderful gems. There was power, hope, laughter, love, and purpose in many of the stories this year, right when we needed them most.

The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special - Review

Image
If you say "Holiday Special" to a Star Wars fan, they will most likely cringe, laugh embarrassingly, or just slowly shake their head. It was something that George Lucas himself hated. It's a badge of honor of Star Wars fans to have actually sat through it. It is also something that Lucasfilm definitely wanted to distance themselves from...unless you put "Lego" in front of it. The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special is not a remake of the original Holiday Special but still takes a bit of inspiration from it.

Enola Holmes - Review

Image
Every now and then a movie comes around that surprises you. That came in the form of Enola Holmes, Netflix's newest venture that tells a tale about Sherlock Holmes' younger sister. In short: Millie Bobby Brown delivers a wonderful performance that anchors a strong and poignant story.

An American Pickle - Review

Image
An American Pickle  is the newest Seth Rogen comedy. The HBO Max original is a bit more subdued and less outrageous than some of Rogen's previous comedy. Yet the movie is still funny, and brings a ton of heart and emotion to it.

Psych The Movie 2: Lassie Come Home - Review

Image
This review was originally posted on The GWW . During Psych‘s initial run on USA Network, it gained a massive cult following, developed its own slang and catchphrases, and became one of the network’s biggest show’s ever. With the show’s finale in 2014, the show did right by its fans, giving everyone a satisfying conclusion. But showrunner Steve Franks, and franchise star James Roday still had more to say, and in 2017, gives us Psych The Movie. It was a fun follow up, and even tied up a few loose ends teased in the finale 3 years prior. With the launch of NBC Universal’s new streaming service Peacock, comes another chapter in the Psych universe with Psych The Movie 2: Lassie Come Home. Franks and Roday rarely disappoint, and this is no exception. The movie is a strong entry into the franchise that deals with fatherhood, maturity, and living up to expectations. But it is also a big, heartfelt tribute to Timothy Omundson. Omundson played Carlton Lassiter in the series, and days befor...

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2020

Image
This has been a regular feature on my site since I launched it in 2017. The format has stayed pretty much the same. This year, things will be a bit different though. They kind of have to be.

Nobody Knows I'm Here - Review

Image
Nobody Knows I'm Here was a Tribecca Film Festival winner (Best New Narrative Director) that just released on Netflix today. If this year had a full slate of movies, it might have been overlooked by the general public, but it will have its chance to shine in a less crowded space now.
