Aquaman - Review

Image
My experience with the DCU is not great. The Arrowverse over on The CW is the DC Universe that I love. The movies have been hit and miss since Man Of Steel . Aquaman is the latest chapter, and it is relatively pleasing for the most part.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse - Review

Image
Every now and then comes a film so spectacular that you can't stop thinking about it. Spider-Man : Into The Spider-Verse is that movie. It is a visually stunning film, with a great soundtrack, strong story and some of the best character development ever seen in an animated film. You remember when you see a movie this good.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Elseworlds - Review

Image
This review covers this week's episodes of The Flash , Arrow , and Supergirl . They told a 3 part story called Elseworlds, so this review will treat them as one story. My reviews for this week's episodes of Legends Of Tomorrow and Black Lightning can be found right here . Each year the Arrowverse shows all crossover for one big event. Every year they get bigger and better. This year was no exception.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 10 Review

Image
*NOTE* The review for Elseworlds will be in a separate post. This one contains the mid-season finales for Legends Of Tomorrow and Black Lightning . I do realize that Black Lightning is not part of the Arrowverse, but neither was Supergirl , until it was....

Doctor Who - Episode 11.10 - The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos

Image
Doctor Who finales are always a spectacle to look forward to. This year, the finale was right in line with the rest of the season - for better or for worse. It didn't have a finale feel, instead it felt on the same scale as the rest of the episodes.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 9 Review

Image
This week there were some shocking revelations, set ups, and truly emotional moments! The midseason finales are upon us! You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.   *** Supergirl - Episode 4.08 - "Bunker Hill" I always love Kevin Smith episodes in the Arrowverse automatically. But so far, the best one he did was his very first one - an episode of The Flash called "The Runaway Dinosaur". "Bunker Hill" is the first episode that might even come close. The team finally found out who Agent Libery was, but so did Manchester Black. Him infiltrating Lockwood's home was a fantastic bit of television. Things got very tense. The way they incorporated J'onn's struggle to save Manchester was nice too. Manchester is 100% being used to further J

Doctor Who - Episode 11.09 - It Takes You Away

Image
I do not have a definitive ranking of episodes this season, and while I don't think anything will beat "Rosa", the penultimate episode of the season "It Takes You Away" is about as good as it gets. The way it started, I didn't think it would be. Then it slowly won me over, until I was completely enthralled. I wish more TV did that.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 8 Review

Image
This week, we had another Thanksgiving, a prison break, bonding moments, and people realizing how far they will go. A full slate of DC CW shows to feast our eyes on, with one episode in particular becoming an instant masterpiece. You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.

Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2 - Review

Image
Sequels are a tough business, and while a sequel to Wreck It Ralph felt inevitable due to the success of the first one, there was no word on it for some time. But then it happened, and Ralph Breaks The Internet became a great addition to the franchise. There will be spoilers from here on out.

Doctor Who - Episode 11.08 - The Witchfinders - Review

Image
Hot off the heels of Kerblam! Doctor Who shows what its capable of by giving us an adventure that couldn't be more different. From the biggest store in the universe, to a witch hunt with King James. "The Witchfinders" had stakes, emotion, and an interesting alien race.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 7 Review

Image
The Arrowverse celebrated Thanksgiving, which is fitting because some old friends returned. There were relationships tested to the max too. This was one of the strongest weeks of shows, since there really wasn't a weak one in the bunch. You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.

Fantasic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald - Review

Image
The Harry Potter stories are very important to me. They helped shape me, like Star Wars , Doctor Who and superheroes. So naturally I wanted more of that world. But everything outside of the base Potter story has been a disappointment so far. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald is no exception. It might be one of the most insulting additions to the Potter franchise in fact. There will be SPOILERS throughout.  I'll say this right up front: The Crimes Of Grindelwald is nowhere near as bad as Harry Potter And The Cursed Child . The Cursed Child took the canon and put it through a meat grinder, and then blasted the millions of pieces into space where they all individually suffocated, before disappearing completely. The Crimes Of Grindelwald is merely guilty of taking the canon, beating to an inch of its life, and then leaving for dead in the ally. The film is very bloated. There are way too many characters. Most have no significance in the grand scheme of things. W

Doctor Who - Episode 11.07 - Kerblam! - Review

Image
Every season has at least one episode that feels like it could fit into any era of the show's rich history. "Kerblam!" is that episode for season 11. It had an Eccleston-era feel, yet it is easy to imagine David Tennant, Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi starring too. It even feels like you could have sneaked this into the Sylvester McCoy era. That alone makes this one of the better episodes of the season.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 6 Review

Image
This week we had a full slate again! A slate that included two Gotham City references, a drunk cyborg, and an inadvertent Stan Lee tribute. The episodes were very strong this week, making it one of the best that the Arrowverse has seen. You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.

Outlaw King - Review

Image
Outlaw King is Netflix's newest film. It serves as a spiritual sequel to Braveheart in a way. Chris Pine's turn as Robert The Bruce is a visually sensational tale based off a true story.

Doctor Who - Episode 11.06 - Demons Of The Punjab - Review

Image
Sometimes Doctor Who reminds us that human beings can be the worst monsters that the universe has to offer. "Demons Of The Punjab" - written by Vinay Patel (and the first episode of the season not to be written or co-written by Chris Chibnall) demonstrates that very effectively. You can read all of my reviews for this season of Doctor Who right here .

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 5 Review

Image
While The Flash and Black Lightning took the week off so you could vote, we had a ton of stuff this week. Beebo returned on TWO shows, we had a shapeshifter and some daddy issues. Below are my thoughts and musings on each episode that aired this week. You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here .

Doctor Who - Episode 11.05 - The Tsuranga Conundrum - Review

Image
This week had the Doctor and her friends stranded on a spaceship with an alien destroying the ship. That's classic Doctor Who ! Even though the plot was welcome, there are a lot of little things that added up to make "The Tsuranga Conundrum" a mostly forgettable episode.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 4 Review

Image
This week we had a non-traditional villain-centric episode, an uneasy alliance, a murderous fairy godmother, an awkward baseball game, and the fall of a family. Every episode had something good going for it, yet they all had things that needed improvement as well. You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.

Doctor Who - Episode 11.04 - Arachnids In The UK - Review

Image
The first "spooky" episode of the Chris Chibnall has come at last. What is creepier than giant spiders? It's a testament to the show that you can do something as serious as Rosa Parks one week, and then giant spiders in a hotel the next. You can read all of this season's reviews right here .

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 3 Review

Image
Legends Of Tomorrow returned this week, which means we have a full slate! This week we had a prison escape, a prison fight, a murderous unicorn, a new old face, and a villain put in prison! Read my reviews of all FIVE shows below! You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.

Doctor Who - Episode 11.03 - Rosa - Review

Image
I was very nervous about this episode going into it. For a fun sci-fi show to deal with a pioneer like Rosa Parks had me nervous. The show has dealt with historical figures before, but this had to be handled delicately. Luckily, it was, and the result was one of the most stunningly beautiful episodes in the show's 55 year history.

Daredevil - Season 3 - Review

Image
There are a lot of superhero properties that have been adapted in movies and TV shows. The market is flooded with them. There are ones that do it better than others. The third season of Daredevil is back to form for the show, and it is the standard by which all other superhero shows should strive for.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 2 Review

Image
The flagship show of the Arrowverse is back! Along with Supergirl of course. Arrow was intense, and Supergirl had a lot of great seeds planted for the future. The Flash made me worried and Black Lightning made me cry! My full review of each episode is below. You can read all of this season's Arrowverse* reviews right here . *Yes, I know Black Lightning is not in the Arrowverse officially. But neither was Supergirl ...until it was. I am including it here for convenience sake.

Doctor Who - Episode 11.02 - The Ghost Monument - Review

Image
The first episode ended on a fantastic cliffhanger , and didn't give us everything the "first" episode of a new Doctor usually gives us. "The Ghost Monument" again written by showrunner Chris Chibnall, gave us a worthy follow up to the premiere.

Bad Times At The El Royale - Review

Image
Every year there is a movie that surprises everyone. Bad Times At The El Royale  is that movie this year. You don't see pulpy noir thrillers anymore, let alone great  pulpy noir thrillers. Director Drew Goddard did outstanding work, crafting one of the best movies of the year.

2018-2019 Arrowverse Roundup - Week 1 Review

Image
And just like that...the Arrowverse is back! Yes, I know that Black Lightning isn't technically part of the Arrowverse, but he's been in the commercials with them, and I want all the CW Superhero shows consolidated into one post. Both Black Lightning and The Flash returned this week! Both did a lot of work in a short time too. So let's get to it.

Doctor Who - Episode 11.01 - The Woman Who Fell To Earth - Review

Image
At long last, the Thirteenth Doctor is here! The long awaited season premiere of Doctor Who finally aired, and there was a lot to unpack, so let's get to it. There will be SPOILERS throughout, so only read if you've watched the episode.

Hold The Dark - Review

Image
Hold The Dark is Netflix's newest movie, and I had high hopes for it. It is very ambitious, not at all what the trailer sells it to be, and doesn't quite stick the landing. But Jeffrey Wright's performance is worth a view alone. There will be a few spoilers throughout this review.

Nappily Ever After - Review

Image
Netflix makes it so I watch movies I wouldn't ordinarily see. Nappily Ever After is one of those movies. It is a movie not made for me, but its message is universal. You define you. Don't let society and the perception of you define you. While that theme wasn't explored as deep as it should have, it still gets the point across.

Iron Fist - Season 2 - Review

Image
Iron Fist is definitely the weakest of the Marvel shows, but Jessica Henwick's Colleen Wing is such a great character that it was worth checking in on the second season. Plus, the completionist in me needed to see this chapter. Iron Fist season 2 was actually a pleasant surprise. There will be a few spoilers throughout, so continue reading only if you have watched the season.

BlacKkKlansman - Review

Image
BlacKkKlansman is the newest Spike Lee Joint, and it is a return to form for the acclaimed director. It is a sad time that we live in, when this film is more culturally relevant than it should be. The true story is told effectively, and it really should make you uncomfortable. There will be a few spoilers throughout.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Review

Image
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is definitely the weirdest titled movie I have watched this year. It was a predictable romantic story, but the journey was still enjoyable. As far as Netflix Original Films go, it was one of the better ones. As always, there will be some minor spoilers peppered throughout.

Christopher Robin - Review

Image
Disney has been on a role with their live action remakes of their animated classics. The latest is Christopher Robin which is essentially Hook with Winnie the Pooh instead of Peter Pan. The first two acts of the movie work incredibly well, then it loses its balance in the third act shift only to regain composure shortly thereafter. There will be a few spoilers throughout this review.

Like Father - Review

Image
The newest Netflix Original movie is much better than the last one . But the films couldn't be more different. Like Father is a character piece - and a commercial for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines at the same time. The end game is predictable, but the journeys that both of the characters go on are satisfactory. There will be small spoilers throughout.

Extinction - Review

Image
I love original science fiction stories. I also love the easy medium that Netflix provides in order to view original science fiction stories. Extinction is the latest Netflix Original Film, and while the premise is intriguing, its the execution of it that makes the movie problematic. There will be a spoilers throughout.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout - Review

Image
The latest entry in the Mission: Impossible series gives the franchise some of the best action that the motion picture industry has ever seen. It also gave audiences some of the most emotional and powerful character moments of the entire 22 year old franchise. Mission: Impossible - Fallout seamlessly manages to pay tribute to every chapter in the franchise, while still staying fresh.  There will be slight spoilers throughout this review.

Ant-Man And The Wasp - Review

Image
Ant-Man is back! A few months after the heaviness and franchise altering Avengers: Infinity War happened , comes the next entry into the MCU. Ant-Man and The Wasp serves as the perfect palette cleanser to move us slowly toward Avengers 4 . There will be minor spoilers throughout this review, so continue reading with that in mind.

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2018

Image
Half the year is over! There have been some great movies out already, with even better ones to come. So let's breakdown my favorite films of the year so far. How many have you seen?

Luke Cage - Season 2 - Review

Image
Netflix has given us the next chapter in their Marvel saga - the second season of Luke Cage! The Bulletproof Man's sophomore outing (for his own show, he has appeared in Jessica Jones and The Defenders ) was a strong one, yet it still suffered from some of the same problems as its predecessors. Continue reading to see my thoughts on Luke Cage . There will be spoilers throughout.

Arrowverse Roundup - Week 32 Review

Image
When I started reviewing the Arrowverse, I didn't know if I'd still be doing it 31 posts later. But here we are. For all its faults, its a universe that I love and I plan to continue to do this again. This is the 32nd week of the year that some sort of DC Comics show was on The CW. So only having 20 weeks out of the year where none of the shows are on is pretty good. My review on the Supergirl finale is below, and there are spoilers throughout if you have not watched the episode yet. You can see all of this season's reviews right here .

Incredibles 2 - Review

Image
Pixar has been on a role recently (not counting Cars 3 ) and they finally released the only sequel they ever should have made - Incredibles 2 . Pixar sequels have been more miss than hit, so I was nervous going into this. Luckily, Incredibles 2 is very good. Continue reading below to see more detailed thoughts. There will be some spoilers for the movie within.

Arrowverse Roundup - Week 31 Review

Image
In my experience, penultimate episodes are usually the best ones of the season. That was not the case here. While the episode had some strong elements, it stumbled its way to the finale. Read all my thoughts on it below, and as always there will be SPOILERS for the episode if you have not seen it. You can see all of this season's reviews right here .

Ocean's 8 - Review

Image
Back in 2001, one of my favorite movies ever - Ocean's Eleven was released. It spawned two sequels, and in 2007's Ocean's Thirteen the group had their final send off. 11 years later, a new entry in the franchise is here. Ocean's 8 follows Daniel Ocean's sister. See how she faired in my review below. There will be slight spoilers throughout.
