Enola Holmes - Review

Image
Every now and then a movie comes around that surprises you. That came in the form of Enola Holmes, Netflix's newest venture that tells a tale about Sherlock Holmes' younger sister. In short: Millie Bobby Brown delivers a wonderful performance that anchors a strong and poignant story.

Movie Midterm - My Favorite Movies of the First Half of 2020

Image
This has been a regular feature on my site since I launched it in 2017. The format has stayed pretty much the same. This year, things will be a bit different though. They kind of have to be.

Nobody Knows I'm Here - Review

Image
Nobody Knows I'm Here was a Tribecca Film Festival winner (Best New Narrative Director) that just released on Netflix today. If this year had a full slate of movies, it might have been overlooked by the general public, but it will have its chance to shine in a less crowded space now.

Da 5 Bloods - Review

Image
Hot off the trails of 2018's BlacKkKlansman , Spike Lee is back with another absolute gem. In a year devoid of quality entertainment, his newest Netflix offering Da 5 Bloods  stands above all the rest.

Dolemite Is My Name - Review

Image
Dolemite Is My Name is a true story about comedian Rudy Ray Moore, and his rise to fame. The comedy is elevated by its cast, and brings a cult legend to the forefront with this new Netflix film. Eddie Murphy is one of the funniest people alive. Unfortunately he hasn't had much to sink his teeth into lately that proves that fact. Luckily that all changes with Dolemite Is My Name . It is a role that showcases every one of Murphy's talents, and it pays off big time. Dolemite has a cult following from the handful of films that showed the titular character, but this film is a good "in" for people who are unfamiliar. It lays out the story well, and Moore's journey into stardom and fame is entertaining from beginning to end. Playing a real person is always difficult, but Murphy managed to portray Moore with care and heart, while still having some signature "Eddie Murphy" moments. Even if you aren't familiar with Moore or Dolemite, the film stil...

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie - Review

Image
Breaking Bad is one of the greatest television shows of all time. The way it ended was brilliant, and perfect for Walter White's story. But one character never received the closure he deserved, and that was Aaron Paul's Jesse Pinkman. El Camino provides that closure, and serves as the perfect epilogue to Breaking Bad .

The Red Sea Diving Resort - Review

Image
The latest Netflix film,  The Red Sea Diving Resort,  attempts to provide a powerful commentary on refugees by taking true events and dramatizing them so they work in a movie. The wonderful cast is the only reason this film makes it to the finish line.

Point Blank - Review

Image
Point Blank  reunites Captain America: The Winter Solider  stars Anthony Mackie and Frank Grillo for a fun (albeit predictable) action romp. The Netflix original is a story about the lengths people will go for their families and that there is a lot of gray area in being "good" or "bad".

Stranger Things - Season 3 - Review

Image
Netflix is becoming more and more known for their original IP. One of the biggest things to help with that identity was the launch of Stranger Things . The show was an incredible mix of 80s nostalgia, child wonder, and sci-fi horror. The second season, tried some new things with mixed results, but was overall entertaining ( review here ). The third season got back to basics, which resulted in the strongest season to date.

Jessica Jones - Season 3 - Review

Image
The first season Jessica Jones  is some of the best television I have ever seen. I've been a fan of the character ever since, in both The Defenders  and the second season of Jessica Jones . The third and final season finally aired, and while she got a complete journey, everything else in the season didn't quite land for it being the last hoorah.

Rim Of The World - Review

Image
This review was originally published on RevengeOfTheFans.com Netflix’s newest film, Rim of the World is an adventure filled with emotion and excitement. The intrigue, heart, humor and spectacle of the characters are what makes this story tick. The film, written by Zack Stentz and directed by McG, has a Spielbergian sense of adventure, with a John Hughes coming-of-age feel. It’s a throwback to the 80s, with a modern sensibility.

The Last Laugh - Review

Image
It's not a good thing when you get exactly what you think you are going to get out of a movie due to what service it is on. But The Last Laugh  is Netflix's newest original film, and it is as formulaic and stale as you would expect.

Outlaw King - Review

Image
Outlaw King is Netflix's newest film. It serves as a spiritual sequel to Braveheart in a way. Chris Pine's turn as Robert The Bruce is a visually sensational tale based off a true story.

Daredevil - Season 3 - Review

Image
There are a lot of superhero properties that have been adapted in movies and TV shows. The market is flooded with them. There are ones that do it better than others. The third season of Daredevil is back to form for the show, and it is the standard by which all other superhero shows should strive for.

Hold The Dark - Review

Image
Hold The Dark is Netflix's newest movie, and I had high hopes for it. It is very ambitious, not at all what the trailer sells it to be, and doesn't quite stick the landing. But Jeffrey Wright's performance is worth a view alone. There will be a few spoilers throughout this review.

Nappily Ever After - Review

Image
Netflix makes it so I watch movies I wouldn't ordinarily see. Nappily Ever After is one of those movies. It is a movie not made for me, but its message is universal. You define you. Don't let society and the perception of you define you. While that theme wasn't explored as deep as it should have, it still gets the point across.

Iron Fist - Season 2 - Review

Image
Iron Fist is definitely the weakest of the Marvel shows, but Jessica Henwick's Colleen Wing is such a great character that it was worth checking in on the second season. Plus, the completionist in me needed to see this chapter. Iron Fist season 2 was actually a pleasant surprise. There will be a few spoilers throughout, so continue reading only if you have watched the season.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Review

Image
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is definitely the weirdest titled movie I have watched this year. It was a predictable romantic story, but the journey was still enjoyable. As far as Netflix Original Films go, it was one of the better ones. As always, there will be some minor spoilers peppered throughout.

Like Father - Review

Image
The newest Netflix Original movie is much better than the last one . But the films couldn't be more different. Like Father is a character piece - and a commercial for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines at the same time. The end game is predictable, but the journeys that both of the characters go on are satisfactory. There will be small spoilers throughout.

Extinction - Review

Image
I love original science fiction stories. I also love the easy medium that Netflix provides in order to view original science fiction stories. Extinction is the latest Netflix Original Film, and while the premise is intriguing, its the execution of it that makes the movie problematic. There will be a spoilers throughout.
